You’re Invited to our Senior Service Project Showcase
 Tuesday, May 24th 2016
 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph High School

This semester, our 21st Literature and Writing seniors have been busy designing and executing Senior Service Projectsreal-world project imagined by students to positivity impact our communities.  From  directing a theatrical production to hosting a benefit concert for the Southwest Michigan Out Center, students have spent the semester making our world a better place.
On the morning of Tuesday, May 24th, 80 seniors will have the opportunity to showcase their extensive learning activities and outcomes of the community service projects with a formal presentation.  All 80 seniors will present in front of community-member judges throughout the morning of May 24th,  8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
A schedule of presentation is now available. Check out the schedule by clicking this link.

We look forward to seeing you!

Senior Prom for Senior Citizens

Friday, May 13 the St. Joseph High School Key Club hosted a prom for Senior Citizens at the Whitcomb Towers, a local retirement residence. Members, Samantha Turk and Peter Chen chaired the project.  There were 10+ members on the committee.  This project was partially funded due to the $500 Heart of Cook Grant that was awarded to the committee.  The committee hired Music Connection (Will and Marilyn Smaka) to play music and provide the wooden dance floor.  They are part of a five-person band that plays regularly at the Whitcomb.  The residents are familiar with their music and enjoy the band.
The committee members decided on a “Disney Princess” theme.  The food included a chocolate fountain served with cut fruit, marshmallows, and pretzels.  They provided cheese, crackers, and cookies.  Coffee, water, and lemonade were also provided.
The committee secured door prizes from local businesses and took pictures during the dance, which were printed and passed out to the attendees.  The door prizes were from Kilwins, St. Joe Today, Forever Books, Jimmy Johns, and Bigbby Coffee.  At the end of the dance, a King and Queen were crowned!
This project was such a success.  Students dropped all their inhibitions and got right out on the dance floor with the residents.  The Key Club members would sit at tables and initiate conversation with residents who couldn’t get up and dance.  The students were very thoughtful and genuine.   The project is being planned again for Spring 2017.

Ren Baldwin Tech Fest Update:

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Ren Baldwin Student Technology Festival!  Thank you to the Interact Club, Key Club, Robotics Team, Graphic Arts Club, and all of the teachers and staff members who made Friday night a huge success!  Also, thank you to the SJPS Foundation and Fairmount Santrol for sponsoring the event.  A very special congratulations goes to the grand prize winner, Shreeja Shrestha and her teachers sponsor, Mrs. Tracy Becker.  In addition, congratulations to Mrs. Joyce Hunter for being honored as the SJHS Technology Using Teacher of the Year by her colleagues and to senior Maya Murphy who won the Chromebook giveaway!

Special News:
Dear Mr. Cole,
I just wanted to thank St Joseph High School for sending Student Ian Paul to play the bugle at the St Joseph County Police Memorial today, May, 13th, 2016.  I am a member of the Pipes & Drums of the Emerald Society Chicago Police Department and played the bagpipes alongside Ian.

I was very impressed with Ian's patriotic deportment.  He was proud that your school is again saying the Pledge of Allegiance. He was keenly aware of the somber event and made sure that his conduct was appropriate.

He played Taps magnificently.  Take it from someone who has sadly listened to Taps many times.

Anyway, I didn't know who to send this email, I figured you being a Marine would make sure it got to the right hands.

Semper Fi Marine,

Alex Rodriguez
