FAFSA Help Available at Nearly 40 MI College Goal Sites Statewide

College-bound students and their families will find completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) a breeze with hundreds of helpful volunteers at nearly 40 MI College Goal sites statewide in February. "Many students and their families find the FAFSA a big challenge,” State Superintendent Brian Whiston said. “The good news is these MI College Goal events provide student aid experts who can guide families through the complex applications and help get the most benefits for students wanting to go to college.” Thirty-eight sites are available to date for the 2016 MI College Goal, a team effort of the Michigan Department of Education, state Treasury, Michigan Student Financial Aid Association, and the nonprofit EduGuide, an online training program designed to strengthen core-learning skills. More information about event dates, times, and locations is available at www.micollegegoal.org . Traditionally, most events occur afternoons on the

High School to Help Fundraise for Flint

Our high school students will have the opportunity to help raise funds for the people of Flint during the week of February 1-5.  Obviously this is a very tragic situation, and the citizens of Flint will be in need for some time as they look to recover from this situation.   I am impressed over and over by the generosity of our students, both with their time and with their resources.  Other buildings in our district are also taking part in fundraising activities to help Flint.   During that week, students will be able to donate during their lunch period.  Student Senate representatives will be helping to collect money for the week.  Students who donate $5.00 or more will be entered into a drawing to win gift cards from local establishments and free admission to upcoming sporting events.   The United Way of Genesee County and the Community Foundation of Greater Flint have established a fund for the families and children impacted by the lead.  The website is:  www.flintkids

Spring 2015 MSTEP Results Being Sent Home

Happy New Year! We are in the process of sending home the results to the 2015 MSTEP that was given in March 2015 to the current senior class.  You should receive these by January 15, 2016. In the 2014-15 school year, the state of Michigan replaced the 44-year-old MEAP test with the new Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress.  It is aligned to Michigan's challenging learning standards and is administered each spring to the current 11th graders. The scores you receive will report how your student did on the ACT WorkKeys, and the M-STEP in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  In addition, it will also review ACT scores from last spring. Beginning in the spring of 2016, the SAT will be replacing the ACT as the college entrance exam. If you have questions on these results, or you do not receive them, please contact me at any time.  For more information on M-STEP, please visit www.mi.gov/mstep Kevin Riggs kriggs@sjschools.org
