Robotics:
The Average Joes
have had a wonderful season.
In the beginning of
January, teams in the local area went to LMC for the 2016 Kickoff. This is when
the team learned FIRST’s challenge for this year – Stronghold. The 6 week build
season passed in the blink of an eye; then the 6 weeks of competitions started.
Week 2, the Joes played at St. Joseph District Event. They ended the
qualification matches in second place. When it came time for alliance selection, Stryke
Force from Kalamazoo chose the Joes to join the 1st place alliance. This became
the start of a collaborative and beneficial friendship. The alliance won
the event. In addition, the Joes won the Gracious Professionalism award –
an award for a team that has gone above and beyond to help other teams during
the competition. They also had one of their junior members (Amelia Ostdiek -
win Dean’s List). The team headed to Kentwood for the second competition
of the season. The Average Joes ended in 1st place after qualifications and
chose Stryke Force for their alliance partner. They ended the competition when
they lost in the quarterfinals. The Average Joes also won the Entrepreneurship
award - an amazing feat for
the team. These efforts easily qualified them for the state competition. The team performed there better than any
previous year. They went on to be the 8th place alliance captain and were
eliminated in the quarterfinals.
This qualified
the Average Joes to go compete at the word competition in St. Louis. They were
placed on the hardest field of 8 with world-championship teams. Average Joes
were picked by the 4th place alliance, bringing them all the way to the
semi-finals of the field. This year has been the best in all of Average Joes
history. They are very proud of what they have accomplished and look forward to
accomplishing even more in the years to come.
