Band, Orchestra, and Choir News:

The SJHS Band and Orchestras sent (virtually) 4 ensembles to the annual Michigan Band and Orchestra Festival and all four groups received Division I ratings from the adjudicators. (The highest possible rating) The SJHS choirs sent two ensembles also were very successful at their festival, but the state choir association opted not to give ratings this year.

Along with their success at Festival, we had several Band members receive honorary mentions for the Solo and Ensemble Festival this year:

Blaine Hooks - Trumpet Solo

Sylvia Park - Flute Solo

Peyton Maynard - Clarinet Solo

Clarinet Quintet - Ari Burgeson, Mya Dixon, Hadley Matlock, Ella Ott, Ashley Schlipp

Also, the SJHS String quartet won the MASTA (Michigan Chapter of the American String Teacher Association) Chamber Music Festival. This quartet consisting of Kevin Wang, Ben Savage, Anna Miesse, and Grace Portenga won the grand prize and will be a featured ensemble at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival this year.

Senior Parent Committee:

Dear Parents,

The countdown is on!

We are finalizing the last of the details for our Senior “Celebash" at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport in Benton Harbor on Sunday, June 6th.

Busses will be ready to take the graduates over immediately following the graduation ceremony.

Dress attire is semi-formal to formal wear and what students wear to graduation under their cap and gown is what they will wear to the Senior “Celebash”.

THERE WILL BE NO TIME FOR CHANGING AND STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO THEIR CARS AFTER GRADUATION.  PARENTS SHOULD COLLECT CAPS AND GOWNS AFTER CEREMONY.

We understand this may not be ideal for all students, especially girls who may be planning on wearing long gowns.  However, the Senior Class Parent Committee is responsible for the safety and well being of all SJHS graduates attending the Senior "Celebash".

Buses are scheduled to leave at 8 PM sharp and ONLY students on buses will be allowed into the graduation party.

A few other housekeeping items to note:

  • RSVP’s are due by Sunday, May 2nd

  • For those who have RSVP’d, waivers will be emailed next week and must be returned before Friday, June 4th

  • For the safety of all graduates, all belongings must fit into a clear, quart-sized plastic bag.  All students will be expected to empty their pockets or purses and contents will be placed in a plastic bag PRIOR TO BOARDING THE BUS.   Graduates may not leave any items on busses.

We are so excited to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our children!

Guidance Office News:

GUIDANCE NEWS

BALANCE  is our theme for MAY

It was so nice to have all of our students back in person last week!  As we begin a new month filled with more activities at and outside of school, we want to share some resources to help you find balance.

What's New This Week in our google site COVID-19, Guidance & SEL:

In the Parent Resources section:

Too much focus on ‘learning loss’ will be a historic mistake from Edutopia - Learning loss is real and needs to be addressed, but how we go about it should be commensurate with the size of the moment.

In the Community Resources section:

Do you need help paying for the internet? - from Common Sense Media - Congress created the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (EBB) to provide short-term assistance to individuals, students, and families to help pay for internet service and devices.

Be Kind to your Mind - MI StayWell Counseling team is offering a  free virtual support group sessions (especially for 14-17 year olds)

What’s Happening at School:

Encourage your HS student to  check their grade level google classroom (classwork section under general info for job postings).  We just added info about: Lane Automotive, Fitch Camp in Dowagiac,  Air &/or Space Force Recruiting opportunities.  Work permits can be obtained from the office.

If you have job opportunities we can share,  please reach out so we  can get your information to our students!

At Upton, we are starting an academic support group to help students with organizational skills.

Please remember we are here to support you - reach out if you have a question/concern:
