Book Club:
In just its second year, the high school book club, Project LIT now has reached 50 student
members. Last week club members voted for The Benefits of Being an Octopus, by Ann
Braden, a book that takes a hard look at a kid striving to balance life's challenges while
struggling with poverty, as the first club read of "Season 2." Last year Project LIT at SJHS
was awarded a national charter and is now one of over 500 chapters across the country.
Project LIT is a national grassroots movement, led by students and teachers, that aims to
increase book access and change the culture around reading and literacy, putting
high-interest Young Adult books in the hands of students free of charge. Asked about the
strong interest in Project LIT this year, club advisor Mr. Arbut responded, "I'm excited, but
I'm not surprised. Our students are hungry for stories that they can relate to, and stories
that can broaden their perspective. As Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop says, stories can act as both
mirrors and windows, and our students deserve both."

The class of 1969 took a tour of SJHS this past weekend. They had a great time with Mr. Berry

the same as it did in 1969 :).
