Orange Wednesday: Honoring Mr. Leonard

This past Wednesday, our students wanted to honor Mr. Leonard, long-time Upton Middle School Teacher, who passed away last week.  As the story goes, Mr. Leonard had a long standing tradition of wearing orange on Wednesday’s to school.  Based on the picture we were able to get of our students as they left school last Wednesday, Mr. Leonard left a lasting impression on so many of our students!  Mr. Leonard will be dearly missed by our St. Joseph school community.

okay to reach out if we need help.

Here are a few resources to help you in this challenging time.

“Empathy has no script.  There is no right way or wrong way to do it.  It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘you’re not alone.’

Black History Month: February

As we celebrate, support, and recognize Black History Month at SJHS you will see and hear about a few different activities that will be taking place throughout the month.  Here are a few of the highlighted events/items planned.

  • In US History Classes - Slides of historical and current significant figures in Black History were created by students and will be placed on our scrolling TV monitors throughout the month for students, staff, and visitors to view.  Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Yryk7_hKF6YhqZWlZidb4qDxlj0zxdEyxqDNXLlxwEo/edit?usp=sharing

  • 1st Hour Classrooms will be taking the next two weeks when time allows to coordinate the design of their classroom doors with a Black History significant person or event!   The goal will be to have nearly 50 different visible recognitions significant to black history displayed throughout the building for all students and staff to see and discuss.  Can’t wait to see what the students and staff create!   We will share pictures as their classroom doors come to life.

  • In the Media Center:  Destiny Collection: Black History Month and Beyond

This collection in Destiny, the online library catalog, features black authors and voices as we celebrate Black History Month--and beyond.  These books--and more--are available to students for check out.  We look forward to sharing the Black History Month book display in the library and to helping students find a good read for February!
