Robotics Update: Average Joe’s
The SJHS Robotics team, the Average Joes, competed
at the FIRST in Michigan State Robotics Competition this past weekend. The team
was more successful than any year in its six year history.
The top 102 teams in the State competed at the
DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids. After 12 qualifying matches the Joes were seeded in
9th place. Matches are played with 3 robots against 3 other robots and the Joes
were the 8th place Alliance Captain heading into the Octofinals (Sweet 16 to
use an equivalent comparison). They selected the Comets from Grand Rapids and
the Goon Squad from Woodhaven. Teams are required to win 2 out of 3 matches in
order to move on to the quarterfinals. The alliance won the first match, tied
the second (lost per tie breaker rules) and lost the third against the 9th
place alliance.
This is the Joes 4th State appearance and the
first time ranked high enough to earn a spot as an alliance captain. They are
currently ranked in the top 5% of teams in the State and handily secured an
invite to the World competition to be held in St. Louis on April 27 - 30.
While attending the World event, students will have the opportunity to not only
watch 600 robots but also meet with college representatives in Scholarship Row,
network with employers of companies such as NASA, Lego and SpaceX at the Makers
Faire, talk with thousands of robotics students from across the world and
attend multiple seminars on Robotics and STEM related topics.
Congratulations Average Joes and good luck at the World Championship!
