Chili Cook Off
Competition: Congrats!!!
Congratulations
to the “Netflix and Chili” team of Logan Borah, Daniel Okonski, and Ali Koehler
as they won 1st Place in the downtown Chili competition Friday night. They
competed against 30 other teams (many of whom were professional chefs)!
The judges felt our high school team had the chili with the best texture
and most balanced flavors! They served approximately 600 tasting cups at
the Caffe Tosi location. A big thanks to Ann Reitz, owner of Caffe Tosi for her
support.
Athletic Sportsmanship:
Mr.
Guzzo and I (Mr. Blomgren) received this email this morning from one of the basketball
officials we had for the game this past Friday and I wanted to share with all
of you. This is what it is all about!!! Proud of the representation!!
Congratulations
to Coach Schaffer and the boys team for bringing this type of recognition to
our school and community!
Gentlemen,
Just wanted to
congratulate you on what I saw Friday with your men's basketball program. I've
officiated this year from Jackson to St Joe and although I think the overall
quality of basketball in SW Michigan is down a bit I was so impressed with what
I saw from your team Friday night. From my perspective your Bears embody
everything I would want in a HS athletic program. Hardworking, positive
attitudes, well coached, unselfish, competitive, prepared and good
sportsmanship from your bench personnel and players on the court. No gestures
on calls, no negative comments to officials, no chatter to the other team. This
was all very refreshing because it seems to be an ongoing issue in HS sports
these days. I would also congratulate your student body on their enthusiasm and
support while also representing St Joe in a positive manner and displaying good
sportsmanship. I know none of this happens without positive leadership. I know
that building principals and ADs can set the tone and the expectations so thank
you for your hard work in all of these areas. Mostly congrats to Coach Schaffer
for teaching more than basketball skills and helping develop young men of
character.
By the way --easy to ref
your kids because they are sound fundamentally, play on balance and under
control, play within themselves, and understand situations and are organized
and ready for what is happening on the floor.
Thanks for a great night
and good luck moving forward.

St. Joseph Literary Magazine:
evoke, the 2017 Literary Magazine of St. Joseph High School
Earns Highest Award in National Competition
St.
Joseph, MI – January, 2018 – evoke, the literary magazine
from St. Joseph High School has earned the Highest Award by the
National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Program to Recognize Excellence
in Student Literary Magazines (PRESLM). This is the top honor in this
nationwide contest.
The
60-page literary magazine was included in the May, 2017 issue of the Wind-Up.
It included works from 54 high school students in 24 different categories.
Genres included writing, like essays, journalism, and poetry but also art, like
painting, mixed media, photography, movies, architecture, and sculpture.
Student
editors were Erica Heathcote, Lit Mag Editor-in-Chief; Annie Klusendorf,
Wind-Up Editor-in-Chief, and Mia Altholz, Wind-Up Managing Editor. Mrs. Joyce
Hunter advised both publications.
This
year, 371 literary magazines were submitted for review. Of that number, 26
received the Highest Award. State and national judges complete first round
judging based on a point system. Magazines scoring 91–100 and recommended by
the state and national judges for Highest Award are displayed at NCTE’s
(National Council of Teachers of English) Annual Convention in November and
judged by the PRESLM (Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary
Magazines) Advisory Committee. The Committee determines whether a magazine
meets enough criteria to win the honor of Highest Award.
Foods Fun!
Students
teaching Staff...
What
started as a conversation between Mrs. Siemans and a couple students about
favorite foods turned into an afternoon of fun! A group of staff members met in
the Foods room last week to learn how to make tamales from Tabatha Cantu and
Mexican Rice from Gina Ayala! Thank you to all who brought ingredients, prepped
stuff at home, and who helped roll the corn husks! We ♥️ learning new things!
