HS Blog 9/6 – 9/9

Welcome Back:
We are excited to have everyone back!  Wouldn’t you know it, a couple of the hottest days of summer of course when we return to school with over 1000 of us in the building.  Students are working through stations this morning getting pictures, technology tips, schedules, homeroom information, and class meetings.  We will be running through a shortened version of the daily schedule this afternoon and I know teachers are excited to get the students back into classrooms!

Emergency Cards:
Parents and students – Emergency information forms which were sent home in fall newsletter need to be returned asap.  Students were to bring these with them to school today, if students did not return we will be contacting you to get this form submitted.  Please take initiative to get this done for us, as this is very important for communication purposes as we progress through the year.

Student Pictures:
School pictures were taken today.  If you did not purchase or send your student with picture packet you can still order pictures online at:
And then you will need to enter the code: 08307WB

Student Drivers:
Student drivers must have parking permit to park in the student lot.  Students may obtain parking permits from Cathy Siemans, Attendance Secretary.  Cost is $5 for parking permit which is for entire career of student and car at HS.

 Student Dress Code:
Parents, we are asking that you assist us to make sure students are properly dressed for school.  Please refer to the student handbook and make sure we are sending students to school appropriately dressed.

School drop off and pick up (School Hours):
School doors open at 6:45am.  We recommend no drop offs until 7:15am as we will then have enough staff in building for supervision.  Please remember we like drop-offs to occur on the Lakeview St. side of the building as our buses and student drivers are entering on the Stadium St. side of the building.

After school, it is very important and we want to emphasize that students have arranged transportation by 3:15pm.  We will be communicating with you if your students are in the building past 3:15, unless they are with a supervised activity.

Guidance Dept. News:
·      The Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) was established in 1987 under the Annual Higher Education Appropriations Act as an incentive program that encourages eligible students to complete high school by providing tuition assistance for the first two years of college and beyond.
Students must meet a Medicaid eligibility history requirement. Eligible students must apply prior to high school graduation (high school diploma or its recognized equivalent). The program targets students with financial need so students are encouraged to also complete the FAFSA.

·      The Michigan College Access Network and College Week Live are partnering for the first ever Michigan Virtual College Fair, held October 6, 2016. Students from across the state of Michigan can log in after school to explore colleges and chat live with college admissions counselors. Sign up for free: http://www.collegeweeklive.com/sign-up/michigan-virtual-college-fair?refcode=COU_MICAN_B2S2016&utm_source=MCAN+Updates+-+September+1%2C+2016&utm_campaign=enews+9-1-16&utm_medium=email

·      We have many classes at St. Joseph High School that are eligible for direct college credit through Lake Michigan College.

If your student is enrolled in a class that is eligible for direct credit, they will be receiving information from our LMC reps on Wednesday, Sept. 14 during the school day. The registration deadline for fall enrollment is Sept. 29, 2016. That includes qualifying test scores that may be required.
