Key Club News:

This past Friday, the St. Joseph High School Key Club hosted a prom for Senior Citizens at the Whitcomb.  Members, Guneev Gill and Kate Sherman chaired the project.  There were 15 members on the committee and 30 members attended the dance. The committee hired Wil and Marilyn Smaka to play music and provide the wooden dance floor.  The committee also invited any senior living in Berrien County to attend.

The committee members decided on a “Night Under the Stars” theme.  They chose to crown a king and queen who danced all night - and the king was 100 years old!

The committee secured door prizes from local businesses and took pictures during the dance.  The door prizes were from Silver Beach Pizza, Kilwins, Caffe Tosi, Perennial Accents, Zoup, Forte Coffee, State Street Treats, and St. Joseph Today.

This project was on a 3-year hiatus due to covid so it was such a great feeling to bring it back.  It was a huge success!

This past weekend Clara Berry attended Key Club International’s Governor Training Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. 33 District Governors, including Clara who represents Michigan on the International Council, received training on how to lead their Districts as Governor. Clara is so excited to implement the ideas she gained at the conference to better serve the Michigan District!

Clara Berry and Kayla Valdes (St. Joe Key Club Bulletin Editor) will be traveling to Anaheim, California in July to represent St. Joe and the Michigan District at the Key Club International Convention!

National Award:

Congratulations to juniors Hannah Webb and Anecia Galvin for winning the 2023 NCTE Achievement Award in Writing!

The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation.

This year, schools nominated 360 students. Of that number, 114 were selected to receive the First Class designation, 131 received the Superior designation, 71 received the Excellent designation, and 31 received the Merit designation. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two to three independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. For more information about the NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing, including past winners, see http://www.ncte.org/awards/achievement-awards-in-writing/.
