NHS Tutoring:
Since we are
beginning a new semester this week, we will not be having NHS tutoring this
week. We will plan to resume the after
school tutoring sessions again next week.
BYOD @ SJHS:
As the second semester
begins, please remember that St. Joseph High School is a BYOD (Bring Your Own
Device) school. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop computer to
school with them daily to support learning activities in the classroom.
Devices will be used frequently, so it is strongly recommended that all
students come prepared with a device or plan for securing a device to use this
semester. (A phone is not recommended as a BYOD solution.) For
students who do not have a device to bring from home, SJHS has an
affordable Chromebook
Rental Program. If students are looking for options to purchase a device, SJHS
has a partnership with Best Buy to offer special pricing on suitable devices
for the BYOD program. More information can be found on the SJHS BYOD
webpage.
Lastly, while all SJHS classrooms are equipped with loaner devices for students
who may forget their devices or have repair issues, the classroom laptops
are not meant to be individual long-term solutions for BYOD. Please
plan to make every effort to secure a device for your child this
semester. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact
the main office and we will do our best to help your child with this
program.
Senior Service Project News:
Seniors currently enrolled in 21st Literature and Writing have been
busy developing their semester-long Senior Service Projects. This week students
will bring home their ideas and proposals to discuss goals and projected
outcomes with parents (or guardians). Parents, your student will bring home a
Senior Service Project information letter and verification form. Please read
this over carefully and discuss your student’s proposed Senior Service Project.
Parents and students, the signed forms are due back on Monday,
February 6th. You may either send the form back with your child or mail the
form to the high school.
As discussed in the letter, the details of the project can be found in
the handbook. The electronic version of the handbook is listed below and
is also in your student’s ItsLearning resource page.
Also, mark your calendars. Our Senior Service Project
presentations will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Parents are invited to watch and celebrate our students’ Senior Service
Project presentations. Each presentation will highlight the project’s original
objectives, the project’s process, student inquiry and research, and project
outcomes. I’m excited to see what our SJHS students create —and how they change
the world. Stay tuned for more information.
Any questions can be directed to Tracy Becker, 21st Literature and
Writing instructor and SSP coordinator.

Boys Swim and Dive Team:
The St. Joseph Bears Boys Swim & Dive team won
the Bridgman Invitational on Saturday, Jan 21st. The Bears scored
460.5 points, followed by runner-up Mattawan with 438.
The Bears won the meet with a balanced team attack,
and depth from their swimmers. St. Joseph only won one event on the day,
with senior Captain Patrick Sawyer winning the 500 freestyle by 0.2 seconds
over Mattawan’s Evans Brown. Mattawan actually won 10 of the 12
events. After the 200 freestyle relay, the meet was very close, and the
Bears were only a half point ahead of Mattawan. Mattawan won two of the
final three events, but the Bears put more swimmers on the podium to close out
the victory.
Top performances included Logan Borah placing 2nd
in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 backstroke, and Ayden Moyer
finished 2nd in the 100 breaststroke and 4th in the 50
freestyle.
The Bears had a lot of 4th place finishes
during the meet. Donovan Cool in the 200 freestyle, Brett Tutton in the
200 Individual Medley, Gabe Brunner in diving, Brody Martin in the 100
butterfly, Joey Oberer in the 100 freestyle, and Troy Burrow in the 100
breaststroke.
